Ermoupoli

Ermoupoli is the capital of Syros, the Cyclades, and the South Aegean region — a port town built up rapidly from the mid-19th century as one of Greece's leading shipping and industrial centers. Its civic heart, Plateia Miaouli, is a marble-paved square framed by neoclassical buildings, including a Town Hall designed by Ernst Ziller in Penteli marble and the Apollo Theatre, a smaller-scale 1864 replica of Milan's La Scala. The town had a population of 11,039 at the 2021 census, within a wider Syros-Ermoupoli municipality of 21,124, and remains the administrative, commercial, and ferry hub of the Cyclades.

History

Ermoupoli was founded in the 1820s during the Greek War of Independence by refugees from Chios, Psara, and other islands fleeing Ottoman reprisals, and named for Hermes, god of commerce. Capital and trade connections brought by the refugees turned the town into the industrial and commercial center of the newly independent Greek state by the mid-19th century, outpacing Athens and Piraeus in a period that earned it the nickname "the Manchester of the Aegean" for its shipbuilding, textile, and tanning industries; the Neorion shipyard, founded in 1861, became one of the oldest and most significant in the Mediterranean. Piraeus overtook Ermoupoli as Greece's leading port by the late 19th century, and the town's fortunes declined further during the Italian and German occupation of 1941-44, when a famine killed an estimated 2,300-4,000 of Syros's roughly 17,000 residents over the winter of 1941-42, one of the worst famines in occupied Greece. The shipyard reopened after the war and, alongside a growing tourist trade, helped the island recover by the 1980s; Ermoupoli's 19th-century neoclassical core is largely intact today and forms the basis of its tourism and administrative role.
